Not much blogging recently as I’ve been busy working on a new template for these ramblings. I’m also aiming to move this to the server under the stairs (after a little jiggery-pokery with firewalls etc). However, I couldn’t let this one pass without comment.

I’ve noted before studies that show migrating to OpenOffice.org is ten times cheaper than following a MS-Office upgrade path.

However, it now appears this may be a considerable under-estimate. Reports in the press state that the French tax agency claims that upgrading its 80,000 desktops to Office XP would cost €29.5m, but switching to OpenOffice.org only €200,000.

Maths was never my strong point, but that looks to me that in this case the MS-Office path is nearly one hundred and fifty times more expensive than migrating to OpenOffice.org.

Some business case, eh?
