So, it’s Lyon in September

February 23rd, 2006

OOoConf LogoThe results of the vote between the two contenders for the next OpenOffice.org Conference has been announced – it’s to be Lyon in France from 11th-13th September. If I remember correctly, Lyon was the runner-up last year when the community astonished itself by choosing Koper/Capodistria in Slovenia for OOoConf 2005. The organisers returned the compliment by producing a staggeringly successful conference. The French team have a hard act to follow!

I’ve been to all three OOoConfs, and it’s great opportunity to meet people in the real world who you otherwise only ever ‘see’ on email or IRC. OOoConf 2005 was an amazingly friendly affair, and all the participants enjoyed the social aspects as much as the official conference business. It’s all the more suprising then that the project mailing lists suffer from occasional outbursts of downright rudeness and venomous personal attacks. Why is it that such nice people in real life can be so obnoxious on the net?

This isn’t an OOo-only phenomenon – I’ve noticed exactly the same on other open-source projects – even ones where I’m not a project co-lead :-)
