Breakfast in Dhaka – Luggage in Heathrow

March 6th, 2006

Yes, I know, it’s not an original story, but the world’s favourite airline (sic) deposited us in Dhaka at about 6.30am while managing to leave our luggage behind at Heathrow. Thanks to the miracles of IT, the helpful man at Dhaka had a little printout which showed a list of about ten items which had definitely been left behind at Heathrow, plus another half dozen or so which might have been left behind. So, despite barcodes galore and strict airline security, it’s good to see good old BA still has a Heisenberg-ian uncertainty about luggage.

Unfortunately, the next flight isn’t until Thursday – however, BA in their infinite generosity gave us an ATM card loaded with UKP30 to enable us to survive till then. It would have been more if we hadn’t been flying cattle class – wouldn’t do to let the plebs buy Gucci luggage at BA’s expense.

It’s so hot here I suppose undies will dry out overnight if we hang them up over the bath.

More good news/bad news – the good news is the hotel has a (slow) wifi connection; the bad news is that the proposed OOo 2.0 Bangla session on Friday is struggling to happen due to a lack of venue. I’m hoping to meet up anyway with some of the local OOo / open-source enthusiasts.

Starting problemsOur first day’s full itinerary starts tomorrow – we don’t seem to have done much today other than eat amazingly good meals in first rate restauarants and queue in banks to change sterling travellers cheques (note for next time – just load up the current account and use ATMs). We were so long at the bank that the aircon flattened the batteries on our mini-bus – fortunately, there was a ready made alternative ‘engine’ waiting to give us a cheery start.
