OpenOffice.org on tap
April 5th, 2006I’ve just had an interesting conversation with Pat Cummings, co-founder of MyPrograms, a startup in the US which is developing an on-demand software platform for the common home user, aiming to launch in the middle of the year.
There are a number of big names playing in this space, with Google’s personalised home page and Microsoft’s poor attempt at a ‘me-too’, Windows Live, and of course WebEx has been trundling around since my work24 days. Pat’s concept is taking this a step further. Will it be a case of a small start-up being faster than the big boys?
This is another example of clever thinking finding a cool way to build a business around open-source. OpenOffice.org is ideal for their target market, offering all the features users need with a familiar look and feel. The open-source licence removes any worries about having to hand over control of their business to a third party.
I look forward to their launch and working with them to develop this exciting new market.
