The FAST way to OpenOffice.org
May 27th, 2006ZDnet have a report:
The Federation Against Software Theft (FAST) has threatened to prosecute educational establishments that use improperly licensed software.
“The message is clear: if head teachers, schools governors and even LEAs allow the use of illegal software then it may be a fast track to a criminal record,” said John Lovelock, director general of FAST.
The message is indeed clear, and one that OpenOffice.org has been promoting in its Get Legal – Get OpenOffice.org campaign. Microsoft licences are too complex, too easy to break, and simply too expensive for UK schools, when there are perfectly acceptable and interchangeable free alternatives.
The message is getting through – the OpenOffice.org Marketing Project receives a steady stream of emails from schools, colleges, and universities, checking that it really is ok for them to use OpenOffice.org in the classroom and hand CDs out to their students. The answer of course is “yes” – that’s what free software is all about.
