OOoCon 2006 day -2

September 12th, 2006

Yes, it’s OpenOffice.org Annual Conference (OOoCon) time again. OOoCon officially opens to the world on Tuesday, but my journey started on Sunday with a 6.30 drive to the airport, EasyJet from Edinburgh to Stanstead, and lo and behold find myself behind two OOo folks in the check-in queue at Stanstead, and so on to Lyon. An email invitation brought together an initial group of a couple of dozen folks at a city centre restaurant, which mysteriously grew to more than twice that number by ten o’clock-ish.

It was great meeting up with folks I work with electronically regularly, but haven’t seen since last year – particuarly as you never knew who was going to turn up next. Lyons prides itself on being the gastronomic heart of France, ab=nd there’s certainly a huge number of restaurants in the city centre. The fixed price meal was good value – unless you happen to be a vegetarian. It was also a pleasure to sit in the warm air outdoors until late…

Back to the distinctly classe economique hotel – I asked at the desk if they had a hair dryer for one of my colleagues, only to be reminded it is a one star hotel. However, it is clean, modern, and has air con. And wi-fi works, although annoyingly BT Openzone refused to let me log in, so I’ve had to fork out Eur 10 for two hours’ access to Orange.
