"From an OpenOffice.org perspective, I still see Novell as being one of the good guys - compared to say IBM who repeatedly make good speeches but never actually contribute. So, if Microsoft have thrown money at Novell and boosted their share price then I’m not complaining."

IBM has done so much for Linux I would not slight them with respect to a single (stellar) project:
-a billion invested (and already recouped)
-the ad campaign alone raised the level of awareness of Linux many-fold - remember the Linux kid learning, growing, experiencing every walk of life? How about the empty server room with a consolidated stack in the corner? Those were eye-openers.
-what about SCO v IBM? IBM have spent much more on this case than it might have cost to buy out SCO because it is good PR for them, dumps on the FUD, and gave Linux a lot of publicity. Anyone who has paid any attention to this case will know for sure that GNU/Linux is one serious system.

I am dubious about the Novell/MSFT marriage. It looks like MSFT's patented embrace/extinguish ploy. My reading is that NOVELL will have to stop distributing GNU/Linux because they will be violating GPL. Linux was their last hope. MSFT will extinguish NOVELL by having the community sue NOVELL. How devious and how stupid of the present leadership of NOVELL.
