Now we are two (point one)

OOo 2.0I’ve just been doing some fine tuning to the Press Release for OpenOffice.org version 2.1. There’s the usual batch of goodies, but I think the thing I am most proud of is that this is the third release of OpenOffice.org this year.

Commercial software producers have to persuade users to spend good money on upgrades. For this reason, they have to wait until they have a lot of new features, in the hope they it will be a compelling reason for users to upgrade. This “feature overload” also means there is a temptation to spend more time developing features than testing them :-(

Open-source software doesn’t suffer from this problem. Users are free (as in “free to choose” and “free of charge”) to upgrade or not. So, more frequent upgrades; more freedom of choice; higher quality software. Sounds good to me.
