Easter in the Scottish Highlands
April 8th, 2007
Another beautiful Spring day in Edinburgh yesterday tempted us out of bed at 06:30 (not bad for a holiday!) and off to the hills. Mel and I spent an ‘interesting’ day on Ben Vorlich in full winter conditions at the end of last year (the picture on the right), and we wanted to go back and check some navigational ‘anomalies’ we had recorded on the day…
As usual, the weather on the summits bore little resemblance to the weather in the city – strong winds giving a high wind chill factor, and one particularly strong gust lifting Ben (the dog) off his feet and moving him bodily sideways a foot or so. I think he thought it was a slightly undignified form of locomotion for a ten year old dog.
The visibility was good and we satisfactorily resolved our navigational issue. Ben Vorlich was followed with the ascent of Stuc a’Chroin next door – a slightly more challenging ascent – and back via the path over the Bealach an Dubh Choirein high up the side of Coire Buidh (a really lovely little path once it gets its act together).
Yet another of those days when the weather makes the difference between a good day and a truly memorable day in the hills.
