Green Light
April 30th, 2007Over the past few years we’ve been gradually reducing our energy usage – replacing conventional light bulbs with low energy ones, switching off the TV and the set-top box when not in use, etc. Our utility company encourages internet billing, so by recording our meter readings every month we were able to monitor progress. We’re now down to around 500W in the winter and 350W in the summer. We don’t need air conditioning in Scotland
We’ve now finally overcome our natural laziness and switched our electricity supply to Good Energy, one of the utility companies in the UK offering “green energy” – energy produced from renewables. At 11.93p/kWh their supply is nearly 10% more expensive than our previous supplier (10.88p/kWh), but we’ve also switched our gas supplier to a lower cost supplier, so our overall utility bill should be much the same.
However, it does pose the question – we think 350W is pretty good (fridge, freezer, and web server
on all the time – electric oven…). Is it?
