Sun shines on Apples
May 3rd, 2007An interesting announcement today from the Sun engineers who work on OpenOffice.org. Some of the team are now going to start working ‘officially’ on the OpenOffice.org port for the Apple Mac.
Why is this interesting? The core software development in OpenOffice.org has up till now been led by Sun engineers, with the active participation of the community. Now for the first time we see the roles reversed, with Sun engineers participating in a community-led activity. This shows how important volunteers are to OpenOffice.org development, and we hope it will encourage other programmers to showcase their abilities in one of the world’s leading open source projects.
It is of course also good news for Mac enthusiasts. Although there has been a version of OpenOffice.org available for some time, it looks like an ‘alien’ application – running under duress on a Mac. As we know, appearance is everything for Mac users
so a version of OpenOffice.org that looks like a native Mac application will be much, much more acceptable.
