3′s company
January 28th, 2008They say that good news (and bad news) always comes in threes. Well, at OpenOffice.org this is “the year of 3″, with our next major release – OpenOffice.org 3.0 – scheduled for release in the autumn. That’s good news for the tens of millions of users we expect to upgrade.
However, I’ve also just taken delivery of another wonderful little “3″ – a Huawei E220 USB modem from Three, the absurdly named mobile telecomms provider. This little beauty just plugged into my Asus Eee PC to give me internet access anywhere. No doubt the novelty of watching BBC News on the bus home will wear off pretty quickly, but really, how cool can you get?
With a measured download speed of 328kbps, it’s less than 10% of the speed of my cable at home, but it’s fine for mobile use. At UKP 10 per month it won’t break the bank either. However, over the two year contract it will actually cost more than the Eee PC…

These eee PCs are simply great. One of my friends was still skeptical about them and he kept saying that his GSM USB modem like this one won’t work without hacking a bit. I took my father’s eee PC and demonstrated the contrary. It worked instantly. This being the last attempt to resist from my friend, now he owns a brand new eee PC.

If you’re not using it for anything but your Eee PC, you should really consider modding it and putting it directly inside your case. I did that with a USB flash drive and it rocks.
