OK, so I’ve discovered that, with enough patience, my Eee PC (original 701 model) can successfully rip DVDs to a USB memory stick. The acid test is now: will the battery last long enough to play back the DVD

I used The Shawshank Redemption as a test, playing back through headphones with both the volume and the screen brightness about 80% of maximum. WiFi was off. After 1 hour 4 minutes, the Eee was reporting 60% battery left – suggesting 2 hours 40 minutes total battery life. At 1 hour 57 it was 30% – 2 hours 47 life. When the movie finally finished at 2 hours 16 minutes, there was still 20% left – suggesting 2 hours 50 minutes.

So, it won’t quite do epics like Gandhi (at 3 hours 18 minutes), but for your average movie, the Eee will do the job. Nice one Asus.
