October 20th, 2008From the official announcement on Monday 13th October at 09:00 UTC, to midnight on Sunday 20th October, OpenOffice.org 3.0 recorded an astonishing three million downloads via the Bouncer. That’s:
- 221,230 GNU/Linux users (who might be considered obvious users of the world’s leading open-source office suite)
- an impressive 320,622 Mac OS X users (enjoying OpenOffice.org with a Mac “look and feel” for the first time), and
- a staggering 2,449,863 Microsoft Windows users.
For the record, the balance is 16,723 Solaris users and 1,394 source downloads.
If you haven’t tried OpenOffice.org 3.0 yet, here’s why you should, and here’s where you download it. It’s great software; it’s easy to use; and it’s free. Give it a try!

Comparing these resaults with the copies of Microsoft Office sold per week, this sounds amazing!
Microsoft sells about 1.75 Mio. copies of Office 2007 in a week*
OpenOffice dowloads are higher than 3 Mio. in a week (and without major release generally higher than 1.2 Mio according to the OpenOffice wiki).
Best regards
Aldi
* until the 15th of August 2008 Microsoft sold 120 Mio. copies (Office 2007 was released at the 31st of January 2008).

The actual comment (by S Elop?) was MS has sold 120 Million copies of *Office* since Jan 07. Note it says Office not Office 2007. He did not distinguish which versions. More likely Office 2007 client apps make up less than a third of that number. 2003 was available until June 2008.
Which probably means OOo has been more popular than Office 2007 for some time.
