Lies, damn lies, and Bouncer statistics
November 8th, 2008Following the announcement of the availability of OpenOffice.org 3.0 on October 13th, we’ve been carefully recording the number of downloads logged via the Bouncer (the mechanism behind the OpenOffice.org download site – for more details, see the FAQ). We’d all been hoping that the headline counter on the Marketing Planet would pass the 10 million mark during the OpenOffice.org Annual Conference in Beijing.
Well, the official business of the Conference ended yesterday, and as of midnight last night, the counter was showing 9,971,633 – so close!
However, all is not what it seemed. There have been some strange things happening in the logs recently, which are now being investigated. As a precaution, the reported figures have been adjusted to eliminate some unusual data. The net result is that last night’s running total has now been reduced to 9,703,282.
We’re not saying at this point that there has been a misguided attempt to inflate the figures. If so, it’s actually have been counterproductive, as we’ve taken a conservative approach and the figures now show a worst case number, and probably understate the true number.
However, we’ve taken a ‘better safe than sorry’ view, so when we do finally pop the champagne corks for ten million, we can do so with a clear conscience!
