Adding a Dash to OpenOffice.org
June 3rd, 2009There’s an interesting conversation going on just now on one of the OpenOffice.org Marketing Project mailing lists. When you start up OpenOffice.org, you can either go straight to an application like Writer, or else go to the Start Screen (that’s it below). While that’s all very well and good, it is a little … err … boring?

Ben Horst has posted a suggesting for replacing this with a Dashboard (below), and has posted a mock-up for what it might look like. The key is that users could ‘do their own thing’ with it – it would be a portal to a range of services provided by the OpenOffice.org Community – or anyone else. It’s certainly a neat idea, and something we’ll be recommending to the User Experience Project.

Pretty amazing. A very simple thing, yet having so much power — you should really implement it as quick as possible
Besides – what’s with the “Nearby users” thing? Is OO.o planning to start up a social network?

It depends on it usability and integration with other social networks, such as Orkut or even BuddyPress based on. So basically — on it’s openness and extendability.
But anyway the answer would be — hell yeah

Pretty good idea, it remember me of the early days when StarOffice (rel.5 if I remember) had its own dashboard/ file manager.
Personally, I would to stay away from social networks (I think there are so many and everybody loves its own), unless there are some standard that can be used to interface with them, but I am not aware of it.
Personally, I’d rather appreciate some integration with Firefox / Thunderbird/ Lighting, if any…
