I’ve gone all virtual
October 13th, 2009For the past four years I’ve been running this site from the server under the stairs – a seven year old Dell Dimension 4500S hidden away in a cupboard literally under the stairs in the house here. With an ADSL connection and DynDNS, it was all I needed to keep my little corner of the web ticking over.
However, with the house being on sale, I thought it was wise to move with the times and migrate onto a virtual server. After some hunting around, I decided to give Switchlink a try, as they offer virtual hosting in the UK for a modest UKP 5.59 per month (my electricity bill was probably more than that
.
Why not simple web hosting? well, I’ve got used to having my own server, and like being able to upgrade it and generally mess around with the software. Switchlink give complete root access on an Ubuntu platform, with remote access to backup, restore, and rebuild the container. And they do reply to support emails!
So welcome to my virtual world!
